ST MARY’S church in Tenbury is appealing to expand its food bank operations.
A weekly foodbank session has been run out of the old Methodist chapel once per week for a number of years but as food bank usage has increased, with at least 3 per cent of families having used a food bank in the last year according to official figures, the team at St Mary’s has reached out to locals to help keep the foodbank running.
A spokesperson for the church said: “On an average week we support between 80 to 100 people from the greater Tenbury area.
“In my view, the time has come to expand the organisation, primarily by applying to the Charity Commission for full charity status as this will open up access to further grants to help ensure long-term sustainability.
“To do this we will need to recruit charity trustees to fill the various positions and oversee the operations of the food bank. These people can be from inside or outside the current church membership.”
