LUDLOW Castle hosted a 'Tudor Matchmaking' event to celebrate the bank holiday, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with Henry VIII and his suitors.

Past-Times Living History ran two performances each day on Sunday, August 27 and Monday, August 28, with guests being entertained and enlightened - all while enjoying a day in the grounds of the beautiful and historic castle.

The castle described the event as a "unique, fun, factual family show" and said: "Henry VIII has a problem - he needs to find himself another wife.

"Henry is bored and so, upon the advice of his right-hand man Thomas Cromwell, he is prepared to try something innovative and new! So, will any of the contenders live up to his high expectations?

"Despite what you might think, the Tudor court wasn't all politics and executions (well, for some it might have been)! They also knew how to have some fun.

"Who will be the lucky royal bride to be?"

This entertainment was included as part of entry to the castle, a medieval fortress and tourist attraction that overlooks the river Teme.

The castle was historically significant, as it was a crucial strategic stronghold for control of Wales, being positioned on an imposing high point right on the Welsh border.

Although some of the Grade I listed castle, which is also a scheduled ancient monument, is in ruins, it is a popular site for visitors, and is owned by the Powis estate on behalf of the Powis family.
