A LARGE fuel leak at a petrol station in Tenbury caused "a limited impact" on the river Teme, say the Environment Agency.

Because the river is situated close to the Swan Garage forecourt off the A456, and is a Site of Scientific Interest, there were concerns that wildlife would be impacted by the leak that happened last Friday morning (June 2).

However, the EA is satisfied that there were no dead or distressed species.

A spokesperson said: “We received a report from the owner of a petrol Station in Burford, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire on Friday, June 2 that they have lost petrol from their underground tanks.

“As the petrol station is situated immediately next to the River Teme, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, we worked with emergency services, including the fire and rescue service, to contain the effects of the spill and monitor the river. All fuel was removed from the leaking tank by the owner on the Friday and so that tank is now empty.

“We have been monitoring the situation since Friday and over the weekend.

Our inspections suggest a limited impact on the River Teme; we have not seen any dead or distressed wildlife.

“If local residents have environmental concerns they should contact our 24/7 hotline on 0800-807060.”

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) added: "At 7.32am on Friday, June 2, SFRS Fire Control received a call a call reporting a fire classified as fuel leak/spillage large in Swan Garage, Worcester Road, Burford, Tenbury Wells.

"Three fire appliances including the Environmental Protection Unit were mobilised from Craven Arms and Ludlow.

"There was a report of a large loss of fuel from an underground fuel tank.

"Booms were set up in the river to contain the leaking petrol and tanker attending to empty the leaking tank of remaining fuel.
