Tenbury will welcome back guests from its French twin town this summer for the first time in five years.

Local members of the Tenbury Wells French Twinning Association will host an expected 30 visitors from Pont-du-Casse from Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 6.

Their stay will coincide with Tenbury Countryside Show on Saturday, August 5, which the town’s guests will visit.

A day trip to Powis Castle is also planned.

The French townsfolk last visited Tenbury in 2018, followed by a return visit of 36 guests from Tenbury to the French town in 2019. But Covid has put a dampener on further visits until now, the group said.

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the twinning between the two towns, which came about through friendships struck up between Tenbury lorry drivers and the rugby team of Pont-du-Casse, near Agen in southwest France.

In 1982, it was the first visit of Pont-du-Casse rugby team to Tenbury.

The following year was the initial visit to Pont-du-Case by members of Tenbury Town Council, Round Table, rugby, swimming and tennis clubs, operatic and dramatic societies, and high school staff.

The twinning association plans to mark the occasion with a return trip to the town next summer.
