PEOPLE in Ludlow and south Shropshire are starting to make plans for the Coronation of the King in May.

Plans are forming for street parties and events to celebrate the Coronation of HM The King and HM The Queen Consort on Saturday, May 6.

Shropshire Council has already received four requests, as people countywide prepare to join in the celebrations over the extra Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday, May 6 to Monday, May 8, and more are expected.

Nationally, the Eden Project’s Big Lunch team is co-ordinating the Coronation Big Lunch to be held in towns and villages on Sunday, May 7 and Monday, May 8, which will focus on The Big Help Out, which will celebrate the role of volunteers and encourage more people to get involved.

“The Coronation of HM The King and HM The Queen Consort offers an opportunity to celebrate our communities and those who make a valuable contribution by volunteering,” said Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult social care, public health and communities.

“As we pull together in our communities and celebrate not only this milestone occasion but all that is best about the places in which we live, Shropshire Council has made it easy for people to access all the information needed to organise events on our Coronation planning webpage.

“If your community would like to hold a street party or other outdoor celebration, please be aware that you need to apply for permission to do so. We are already starting to receive applications and many more are expected.

“It is a simple process, but organisers are reminded that they must consult with neighbours and people directly affected by a potential road closure before they apply. All the information you need is there, and there are links to help you plan your parties too. It is incredibly easy to do.”

Anyone seeking permission for a Coronation weekend road closure is advised to apply at least eight weeks in advance of the event, which means applications need to be submitted by Friday, March 10.
