A huge fire involving several hundred tonnes of scrap that sent a large plume of smoke over the Powys border area has now been brought under control.

Firefighters from across mid Wales, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire were alerted to the blaze at a commercial scrap yard in Five Turnings, near Knighton at 8.53pm on Monday (August 8).

Shropshire Fire Service confirmed that the fire involved a 20x30ft steel frame building, approximately eight scrap vehicles and several hundred tonnes of scrap rubbish.

"Crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control," the fire service said on Tuesday afternoon. "We still have a presence on-scene to continue damping down the smouldering remains and expect to be there for at least the next 24 hours."

Residents were urged to keep their windows closed due to the amount of smoke from the fire. People living in the area reported on Monday evening seeing a "huge explosion" and a fire that looked "pretty terrifying".

Firefighters said they could see large smoke plumes from several miles away as they rushed to the scrap yard.

Crews worked with the help of the scrap yard owners to tackle the fire and stop it spreading further to the surrounding area and buildings.
