Llanidloes can look forward to a "spectacular" bonfire night later this year, say organisers.

The town's Rotary Club said plans are underway for the "first major event" in David Margetts' year as the new president.

A Llanidloes Rotary spokesperson said: "Last year it gave the town the first occasion for two years to bring the whole community together and was much appreciated by the large number that attended so this bonfire night has to be even better, special fireworks have been ordered and the materials for a spectacular bonfire are already being collected."

The success of the Llanidloes Carnival was also discussed at the latest meeting.

"It was a pleasure to be part of such an important post Covid town event event and the Rotary Stall was popular so the money collected will be used to support local causes," the spokesperson added.

A new defibrillator funded by Llanidloes Rotary Club and Woosnam and Davies has now been secured on the Hafren Furnishers' building in Llangurig Road and will be ready for use "shortly".

The next organisation that Llanidloes Rotary will be supporting is Credu, a charity that supports carers of all ages. On Saturday (August 6), Llanidloes and Newtown Rotary Clubs will organise and control parking for 'The Big Weekend' for carers at Broneirion, Llandinam.

Rotarian Bernard Morgan advised the latest meeting that he was planning to set up his model railway in the church hall at St Idloes Church on Wednesday (August 3).

President Dave Margetts was delighted to induct and welcome Graham Rowlands as a new member of the Llanidloes Rotary Club.
