CARDIOLOGY inpatient services could move from Shrewsbury to Telford as a “temporary measure” under hospital trust plans, then moved back as part of the Future Fit project.
The service is currently split between the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, and the trust says consolidating in Telford would reduce unnecessary patient waits and transfers, make best use of resources and “help the team evolve into a single-site model”.
A Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust presentation says the service has struggled to recruit clinicians and the department is now at “minimal staffing levels” where “any episode of sickness is putting the service at risk.”
The proposed change will require approval by the trust board, and staff have been kept informed since it was first suggested last year. The county-wide Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee will receive and discuss the presentation.
