WHILST many were enjoying the hot weather, there was an appeal to spare a thought for older people who may need some help during these extreme temperatures that can be as dangerous as cold in winter.

Local charity Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is urging people to check on older neighbours who may not wish to go outside during this heatwave.

Older people may require help with food shopping or collecting prescriptions, and ensuring they stay hydrated with cool drinks.

“We are aware that some older people are less likely to venture outdoors to do their shopping because of the heat,” said Heather Osborne, chief executive of the Age UK organisation that covers Ludlow and south Shropshire.

Age UK STW warns that extreme temperatures can be particularly dangerous for older people, sustained hot weather can trigger health problems unless care is taken to keep cool.

There are lots of things people can all do to keep cool, but popping in to see older neighbours to ensure they are drinking plenty of water, asking if they need any prescriptions collecting or have enough supplies of food and refreshments is particularly important during a heatwave.

Excessive heat can cause heat stroke that is a potential killer and occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature.

People are advised to keep activity to a minimum and make sure any exercise is done either early in the morning or in the evening.

Light loose fitting clothing is best and a hat should be worn when outside.

It can help opening windows at night to let hot air out and allow cooler air in whilst closing them in the morning.

Closing curtains and using blinds can provide shade and fans can help although they move air rather than cool it.

Dehydration is a major risk as people often do not realise how much fluid they shed through perspiration. But alcohol should be avoided as it is a diuretic causing fluid loss from the body.
