LUDLOW has strong green credentials and a woman who has played a part in putting the town on the global map for its commitment to the environment has been recognised.

Jane Cullen has received one of the annual civic awards from Ludlow Town Council.

Ms Cullen has been the Chair of South Shropshire Climate Action Group since it was formed two years ago.

The citation from the town council reads: ‘Ludlow is proud that under her leadership, local volunteers have successfully created and published a Climate Action Plan for the Ludlow Constituency to achieve Net-Zero by 2030; and held a well-attended climate conference in September 2020.

‘It is testament to their magnificent ambition that MP Philip Dunne, who as Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, wishes to showcase the Plan at the UN Climate Change Conference.’

This conference takes place in the autumn in Glasgow.

Mr Dunne, who is a former minister in the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Health is now chairman of the Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee.

The report prepared by the Shropshire Climate Action Group calls for a range of measures to help the county to meet the target to reduce emissions.

These include a much improved public transport system to get people away from using the private car. It wants to see the end of the school run and the introduction of car sharing schemes.

Other changes that it believes are needed include making sure that housing is environmentally sustainable with the use of recyclable materials and a commitment to insulation so that heating can be reduced.

The ethos of the report is that whilst action is needed on a global level by Governments, much can also be achieved by individuals and communities taking action that can have cumulative benefit.

Mr Dunne has presented the report to Government.
