ONE of Ludlow’s best known characters Joyce Brand has died.

Mrs Brand, who was 86, died in Hereford Hospital.

She had been in hospital for several weeks and it is believed that she caught Covid.

For many years a health campaigner and Advertiser columnist, Mrs Brand first came to know Ludlow as a child and although she lived most of her working life in London and the south east, she returned to live in retirement in Ludlow and threw herself into the life of the town.

Mrs Brand had three children, two sons and a daughter, her daughter Jo achieved fame as a comedienne. One of her sons, who lived in Germany, died several years ago.

“Left leaning and passionate for social justice she could be the grit in many an oyster but to the end was well informed and committed to social justice,” said Michael Day, a Ludlow resident and friend for many years.

“Always a bit contentious but her sense of humour, of the ridiculous - qualities inherited by her daughter Jo - ensured a wide circle of friends. Together with her two children and grandchildren they mourn her passing. Joyce was a rare character.”
