BOARDERS are being sought in Bromsgrove to help temporarily home pooches who are undergoing guide dog training in the district.

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is seeking around 10 boarders in Bromsgrove to take in the trainee dogs.

Volunteers must be 18 or over and have a suitable home environment, with a secure garden.

On weekdays, volunteers need to be available at home when a dog gets picked up by their guide dog trainer for a training session and returned afterwards.

Each dog will need to be looked after for around 22 weeks and Guide Dogs for the Blind covers all food and veterinary costs.

Laura Miles, a guide dog trainer based in Bromsgrove, said: “We’re looking for around 10 volunteers in Bromsgrove, who could look after our trainee guide dogs at home while they complete their training.

“On weekdays, dogs will attend training sessions with myself where they’ll learn the skills they need to be life-changing guides.

“On weekends, we like our dogs to have time to relax with their boarders away from their formal training.

“If you could look after a trainee guide dog at home in Bromsgrove, please do get in touch.”

A guide dog normally begins its training at around 12-14 months old with a guide dog trainer.

In normal circumstances, most dogs qualify as working guide dogs by the age of two.

While the majority of guide dogs are Golden Retrievers or Labradors, other breeds such as German Shepherds can also be trained.
