CANCER Research UK in Ludlow is standing up to the disease that affects so many people.

There is hardly anyone in the country that has not been either directly or indirectly affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The Cancer Research store in the town is staging a ‘Stand up to Cancer’ initiative.

“As a shop we are doing a month long fundraiser over four weeks with a different event each week, to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK,” said Jack Childs, manager of the store in Ludlow town centre.

In week one the shop manager took part in a burpee challenge in front of the shop this £1 = 1 burpee. Even before the big day people had donated £270.

Next week the shop is holding party games such as name the teddy and guess the sweets and a tombola in the window all weekend.

The third week will involve a zoom quiz that takes place on Saturday, October 24 costing £5 to enter.

In the final week it will be fancy dress with Mr Childs and volunteers dressed up as they serve customers.

Despite great progress in treating cancer as a result of research it remains a major killer of people of all ages. However, what was once a ‘death sentence’ can in some cases be cured and in others managed long term.

A Ludlow GP, Dr Caron Morton, of Station Drive Surgery, has urged people in the town not to ignore symptoms that might be cancer and to get then checked out.

She says that because of Covid-19 some people are not making an appointment to get checked out.

With most cancers early diagnosis is very important so that treatment can begin as soon as possible.

Others supporters will be joining them dressed for Halloween with trick or treat candy.
