RUNNERS will be taking part in a different kind of city fundraising run this weekend.

Following the cancellation of the popular Worcester City Run in the centre of Worcester, due to Covid-19, a virtual event is being held.

Organisers say they didn’t want all of the training and fundraising efforts for the charity partner, the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust, to go to waste which led them to set up the online version.

The virtual Worcester City Runs include the usual half marathon and 10K distances, but runners also have the opportunity to take part over 5K and in the ‘Run Like A Legend Mile’.

Among the runners taking part virtually this weekend are Dave Pagett who had been signed up to take part in the city run.

“I’m not a proper runner, I started off with the Couch to 5K, then decided to do a 10k and then a half marathon," the 49-year-old said.

“I did the Worcester half last year, and the Birmingham one, and I was going to run the London Marathon for the charity this year, but obviously it all got cancelled. I’m going out early (today) and will be running the lanes of Bromsgrove. I’m also jumping out of a plane to raise money for the Grace Kelly Trust on my 50th birthday, October 10.”

Will Foster, consultant cardiologist with the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Along with colleagues, I will be running this weekend for two causes that have been so supportive of the people of Worcester during the pandemic.

“The Trussell Trust runs food banks, helping those most in need in our community.

“The second charity is the Worcester Acute Hospitals Charity, which supports areas that are not funded by the NHS.”

There is still time to take part in the Virtual Worcester City Runs by registering online at: worcestercityrun.com/virtual-event and, with the help of a special app, record and submit their best time for a solo run at any time from September 5-7.
