A MAN who humiliated, threatened to kill and repeatedly assaulted his wife during a five-year campaign of violent abuse has been jailed.

Gareth Clatworthy went on to intimidate his victim in a failed bid to make her drop the case against him, claiming he 'loved' her.

The fresh offences come just one year after the 40-year old was jailed for a separate case of stalking in which he bombarded another woman with hundreds of violent, threatening messages.

Clatworthy, previously of Stanford in the Vale, now of High Street, Evesham, appeared at Oxford Crown Court today.

He had already pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship, and another count of intimidation.

Clatworthy's victim was his wife who was subjected to the domestic abuse between December 2015, and January 2020, in Stanford in the Vale.

Outlining the case prosecutor Sasha Bailey said the woman's ordeal had gone on for some time before the victim filed for divorce earlier this year.

Among the numerous instances of abuse detailed to the court Clatworthy tried to strangle his victim and punched her.

He also threatened to kill her and called her abusive names.

In one violent episode, where she received a split lip, he said to the woman 'look at you, you are like a piece of s**t on the ground.'

In another he told her 'I hope you get cancer and die' and 'you are a f***ing ugly pig.'

Clatworthy also threatened he would 'murder' both of the woman's parents.

In February he saw the woman in an alleyway and told her he loved her and asked her not to speak to the police.

The court heard that as a result of her ordeal the woman has since suffered from anxiety and panic attacks.

Clatworthy was previously jailed for another matter where he preyed on his victim for six months, bombarding her with violent, threatening messages.

In that case involving another woman he sent her more than 500 messages calling her a 'whore', a 'b**ch', and a 'chemical filled bag of ugly flesh' after their virtual love affair came to an end.

In mitigation defence barrister Gareth James said his client's mental health had 'played some part in it.'

He added: "It does seem that there has been a deterioration over time."

Speaking of the intimidation he said his client did not make a 'direct threat' towards the victim.

Sentencing, Judge Nigel Daly said: "There were multiple methods of coercion and control used over the years.

"You frequently humiliated her, you threatened and used violence upon her."

He was jailed for a total of three years and made subject to a restraining order for 12 years. Clatworthy must also pay a victim surcharge.
