Daniel Sharples, of Griesedale Avenue in Orford, has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

The 37-year-old has also been charged with two further counts of assault and possession of cannabis, and is due to appear before Liverpool Crown Court next week.

However, police investigations are continuing and the Warrington Guardian understands that the charges could yet be changed.

Detective inspector Helen Clegg said: “Firstly, I would like to reassure the two people in these CCTV images that we do not believe that they have committed any offences.

“We simply want to speak to them as they were in the area at the time of the assault and we believe they may have witnessed it.

“I appeal directly to the people in the CCTV images, as well as to anyone who recognises them, to contact the team here at Warrington Police Station on 101, quoting incident number IML531869, or via cheshire.police.uk.
