WHEN members of Ludlow Cancer Support group decided to organise a prize bingo night in aid of the O'Connor Haematology Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, they never imagined the event would raise £850.

After some discussion, it was agreed the group would add another £250 to the total from its own funds, and on September 13, LCSG treasurer, Pauline Goslyn, was able to present Linda Morgan, manager, Haematology Unit Manager, with a cheque for £1000.

The Haematology Department receives approximately 1,800 new cases per year and offers 8000 follow-ups.

Most of its case work takes place in the purpose-built Haematology Day Unit, which consists of 10 stations and two treatment rooms, five out-patient clinics and a quiet room.

Several members of the group have personal experience of the unit and the neighbouring oncology ward, and listened with interest to Linda's talk about the needs and aspirations of the unit: her words evoked both laughter and concern.
