WORMELOW Cricket Club had a season to remember after being crowned Marches champions for the first time.

The villagers beat Builth Wells by seven wickets on the final day of the season to seal the historic title.

And on a day to remember for all at the club, Wormelow’s seconds were also crowned champions of Division Three after going the whole season undefeated.

Firsts captain Tom Cutler said the titles put the club in a great place going forward.

“With the seconds being in Division Two it will mean the gap between the two sides is smaller and players will be able to challenge for a place in the first side,” he added.

With Garnons breathing down their necks, Wormelow knew only a victory against the Welsh visitors would suffice on Saturday.

Builth batted first and although opener Henry Williams showed some resistance with a decent knock of 37, there will little else in the way of support.

Steve Anderson had the second highest total for the Welsh side with 16 as Builth made 148-9 off 45 overs.

Alastair Main was the best of the Wormelow bowlers taking 3-24 while Cutler kept the scoring low with 2-19 off nine overs.

In response, Wormelow got off to a nervous start with openers Matt Deem (17) and Luke Jones (6) failing to make too much of an impression.

However, James Snow (48) and Jasper Linley-Adams (29 not out) put on a third wicket partnership of 62 before Edward Melly hit 36 off 28 balls to give the hosts the all-important victory.

Wormelow’s title comes in the first season after they made the move to the Marches from the Worcestershire league.

And captain Cutler said it had been a welcome one – for many reasons.

“It has been much better in terms of travelling and the games have been much closer,” he said.

“I don’t think the quality is that different and the top four sides in the Marches could easily hold their own over in Worcester.”

Cutler, who was his side’s top wicket taker with 35 victims to his name across the season, also paid tribute to this year’s squad.

“We have had eight or nine lads who have turned out every week and it had made us a strong force,” he said.

“Ally Main is such an asset for us with the ball as not many can bowl at his pace in our league.”

A fitter Deem topped the batting statistics with 591 runs while Luke Jones also contributed 419 in the title-winning season.
