A TRIBUTE has been paid by crew and members of Pwllheli lifeboat to their former coxswain and mechanic Owen Roberts who has died.
Owen, aged 88, spent more than 50 years with the RNLI, initially as a shore helper and crew member, then as an on board crew member of Pwllheli lifeboat, then as a mechanic, progressing to second coxswain and mechanic until he retired in 1989. Later he continued to serve as chairman, honorary secretary and committee member.
Crew member Tomos Moore said: “I’m sure it can be said Owen lived for the lifeboat and saving lives was in his blood. He was unfailing in his loyalty and support to us all at Pwllheli.
“He played an influential role within the station for more than 50 years, and he will no doubt have a lasting legacy saving 75 lives while onboard the lifeboat in Pwllheli. He will be missed by all who knew him.
“He inspired many to join the RNLI and none the less than his four sons Glyn, Alwyn, Bryn and Emlyn which have all served on board Pwllheli lifeboat with Alwyn being our current station mechanic.”
