A RAPIST who preyed on an intoxicated woman he found staggering the streets of Bradford with a broken jaw has been jailed for ten years.

Shaid Hanif lured his victim into a taxi by pretending he was taking her back to join her friends at a nightclub.

Once he got her to his home in Stephen Crescent, Whiteways, Bradford, he waited until she fell asleep before forcing himself upon her.

“From the moment you met her, you intended to rape her,” the judge, Recorder John Thackray, told Hanif at Leeds Crown Court today.

Hanif, 40, was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court last month of raping the woman in February 2016.

Sentence was adjourned so that the probation service could assess the level of danger he posed to the public.

During his trial, the court heard that Hanif targeted his lone victim after he met her by chance in Bradford city centre in the early hours of the morning.

She was covered in blood and heavily under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

When she woke on Hanif’s single bed 12 hours later, she had no recollection of what had happened, but she knew she had been sexually targeted.

She burst into tears when she looked in his bathroom mirror and saw the extent of her injuries.

After the police were alerted, Hanif was traced through the taxi firm he used to transport his victim to his home. He denied raping her, saying she “insisted” on going to bed with him, and he still has not owned up to the offence.

Today, Recorder Thackray said Hanif planned to rape the 22-year-old woman, who was a total stranger, as soon as he chanced on her.

He immediately targeted her as a vulnerable victim when he saw her struggling to walk and covered in blood. She had been attacked by someone else shortly before Hanif met her, or she had suffered a bad fall in the street.

“What she needed was a Good Samaritan, a member of the public to call an ambulance and get help. Unfortunately, she met you. From the very outset, you saw the opportunity to rape her,” Recorder Thackray said.

It was obvious that the woman was in great distress and in no position to consent. She had blood down her top, she had a cut lip that needed stitching, chipped teeth, a cigarette burn to her chest, a broken jaw and a fractured finger.

Shaid’s victim was in court for the sentencing hearing, supported by family and friends.

An impact statement she had prepared detailed the severe psychological effect the rape still had on her.

“Her life has changed forever. She is unlikely to ever recover,” the Recorder said.

She had to give up her job and it affected her ability to form relationships. She had since suffered a stroke and she needed medication and counselling.

Hanif must sign on the sex offender register for life and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was made, also for life.

Hanif originally stood trial for the rape in May 2017, but the jury was discharged after he was attacked in the courtroom by a man in the public gallery.

He was treated in hospital for bruising and the trial was abandoned at the request of his legal team.

They said he was too shaken and shocked to concentrate sufficiently on the proceedings.

After the case, a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police praised the victim for reporting Hanif's abuse.

The spokesman said: “Hanif pretended to be concerned for his victim after he found her bloodied and in a confused state.

"But instead of taking her to hospital for treatment, like any really concerned person would do, he took her to his house and raped her.

“We would like to thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting Hanif’s abuse and hope that today’s outcome will allow her to move forward.”
