LUDLOW MP Philip Dunne is encouraging local residents to be aware of the risk to animals caused by floods.

During the autumn and winter of 2013/14, exceptionally wet weather led to the RSPCA having to rescue 586 animals in danger.

This included cats and dogs, as well as cattle, horses and chickens.

“Localised flooding can present a real danger to animals, but by being vigilant and aware of the risks animal owners can mitigate risk,” said Philip Dunne.

“We have seen the potential damage caused by flooding across South Shropshire in recent years, including in Ludlow and other areas near local rivers. Domestic pets and farm livestock are not only in danger from immediate high water, but also the after effects of contaminated flood water.

“I urge animal owners who think they may be at risk of flooding to sign up for flood alerts, and to forward plan what steps they can take if we do experience flooding again this year.”

Residents can sign up for free Environment Agency flood alerts by visiting www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings. These can be sent by email, phone or text message.
