LOCAL writer Anthea Toft delighted her audience at Bishops Castle Town Hall on March 8 with a talk about her time spent as a wartime evacuee in Mainstone, a few miles from the town. Her recently published book 'Beneath Safer Skies' describes how she left her village in Kent as an eight year old to stay with her mother in a number of farmhouses in Mainstone, ending up at The Reilth with the Deakins family. Mrs Toft spoke engagingly about her time as an evacuee and a number of the Deakins family were in the hall to hear her speak. The event was organised by the Bishops Castle Town Hall and volunteers served afternoon tea.
