The term ‘hardworking’ applied to families (political speeches and Conservative posters) needs more definition and raises questions. Many wealthy people are hard-working but many are not.
How did they come to be wealthy?
Some by hard work but many happen to own what most of us want and are willing to pay for. In the case of land that means rent. As land and house prices rise so do rents and mortgages.
‘Landlords grow rich in their sleep’. This is the cruel ratchet that forces hard-working people to scramble for the bottom rung on the housing ladder and widens inequality. Government tinkering is no cure. Radical measures are needed.
