A MAJOR construction project to build a new supermarket in the heart of Tenbury looks set to coincide with the closure of the main road link into the town.

If Tesco is successful with its latest application to build a supermarket on the former auction yard site, then work would be scheduled to begin in January.

However, this is exactly the time when the Teme Bridge is expected to be closed for major repairs.

This could mean that the traffic bringing materials for the supermarket could have to use diversions on minor roads during the most dif ficult months of the year.

A meeting of planners set for early October in Tenbury will determine the latest application, which Tesco claims has followed extensive consultation with people in the town, including Tenbury Town Council and the chamber of trade.

If the scheme is approved, then Tesco says it would not begin construction during a three-month cooling off period, during which any opponents would have the chance to lodge a judicial review.

“We would hope to start work in the new year with a view to the store opening before Christmas 2012,” said spokeswoman Sophie Akokhia.

Worcestershire County Council is undertaking the repairs to the historic Teme Bridge, which may have to be closed for several months in the early part of 2012.

However, some work that does not involve closing Teme Bridge will begin this autumn and a pledge has been made to keep disruption to a minimum.

As well as the possible work on the Tesco supermarket, the bridge will also be shut to traffic during part of the programme to refurbish the Regal Cinema, which includes a complete replacement of the roof.
