Hooker is man of the match for Cleobury Mortimer against Eccleshall

Cleobury Mortimer 11 pts Eccleshall 5.

HOOKER Simon Boyd gave a man-of-the-match display as Cleobury Mortimer’s young guns secured their first win of the season.

Two penalties from Ed Lewis put Cleobury 6-0 in front at the break and then flanker Josh Thompson crossed to stretch the lead to 11 points.

Eccleshall hit back with a try with 10 minutes left but Cleobury deserved their Midlands Three West (North) success.

“We should have won by more,” said former Cleobury skipper Hylton Smith.

“We had control of the game and we were pleased to get a win in our second game of the season,” he said.

Smith added: “I was the oldest player in the 17-man squad at 32 years. “The average age of the squad was below 22 and that was great to see.”
