Weakened Tenbury slip into bottom two after fifth loss in seven games

Stone Old Alleynians 1 Tenbury United 0.

FIELDING a squad stripped to the bare bones by injuries and work commitments, Tenbury produced a spirited display, but still went down to an early goal in Division 2 of the FTL Futbol West Midlands League.

This was their fifth defeat in seven outings and they now find themselves in the bottom two in the division.

Starting with a squad of just 12, Tenbury’s problems took a turn for the worse after just five minutes when skipper Mike Foster picked up an ankle injury. He replaced Dave Rigby in goal, with the keeper taking over in centre of midfield.

The stand-in keeper was beaten in the 15th minute when the Staffordshire side attacked down the right flank and fired the ball across him and inside the far post for the crucial goal.

The omens looked bleak at this point, but with new signing Ted Crofts solid at the heart of their defence Tenbury held on for the rest of the half.

With the result still in the balance, Tenbury switched their formation in the second half. Rigby moved to the left-hand side of midfield and, with Slovakian player Miroslav Balaz posing problems for the Old Boys down the right flank, Tenbury looked the more dangerous side.

Unfortunately, they were unable to turn pressure into goals, with Ross Oliver squeezing the ball just the wrong side of the post with their best effort. Tenbury looked comfortable in defence, smothering the Stone attacks to leave Foster rarely troubled in his unusual post.

This weekend, United will travel to Bentley, looking for the win to move above their hosts and back into mid-table.
