LUDLOW Castle travelled to Clungunford in a momentous week which brought them the Smart & Cook Ludlow Bowls league title.
This is always a tricky match as the Clungunford boys are usually a very good home side.
After four games it was 3-1 to Ludlow Castle. Richard Lane, 21-2, Mark Watkins, 21-7, and Graham Lane, who won a battle against M Carson (Clungunford) 21-19 were the Castle winning cards. Brian Lewis, bowling some excellent woods, was Clungunford's winning card.
The middle four games also went 3-1 to the Ludlow Castle team.
Rich Harrington, 21-11, Sarah Lane, 21-13 and Rich Griffiths, 21-8, coming out on top with A Moreton winning well for Clungunford, 21-15. The last two Castle bowlers on the green came off with to fine cards, Colin Lane, 21-10, and Mal Griffiths, 21-6, giving the Ludlow Castle a very good 8-2 and +76 shots victory.
On Wednesday, Ludlow Castle travelled to Cleobury and once again were in awesome form winning 8-2 and a very impressive +76 shots.
Four of the Castle bowlers were in tremendous form on the night, producing single figure wins: Gary Crowther, 21-4, Rich Harrington, 21-4, Graham Pritchard, 21-6 and Neil Crump, 21-6.
Cleobury’s winning bowlers were Graham Kitchen, 21-11, and G Wooley, 21-14.
In their third game of the week, Castle played Stokesay at home for their final game of the season.
After four games it was 3-1 to Ludlow Castle with Graham Lane, 21-7, Matt Lane, 21-16 and Rich Harrington winning cards for the Castle while Ben James bowled some excellent woods to get Stokesay’s first winning card.
The middle four games were shared once again with Neil Crump in brilliant form, winning 21-4, and Rich Griffiths, 21-7, coming up trumps for Castle.
Roger Harper had a good win, 21-16, and Ray Hoplick won a titanic battle, 21-20, to gain Stokesay’s winning cards.
The back two games went Ludlow Castle’s way, Colin Lane, 21-10, and Mal Griffiths, 21-11, giving the Ludlow Castle a 7-3 win and a +58 shots victory.
Captain Mal Bowen praised his team for their brilliant bowling throughout the season. Top of the averages for Castle was Graham Lane winning 25 games out of 27 played.
Linney entertained Mortimer for their last league game on the Linney green and, with the weather about the best it had been all season, some fine bowling was seen during the match.
After the first four games, it was 3-1 in favour of Linney with Mike Dempsey, 21-1, Gareth Jackson and Roy Harris both 21-9 winners for Linney with Jim Bourne bowling some excellent woods to give Mortimer a winning card.
The middle four games went two each with all games being well contested.
Matt Bowen, 21-18, and John Smith, 21-13, were Linney’s winners with Mortimer’s captain Jim Roberts 21-15 and Albert Mantle 21-17 winning well for the visitors.
Once again, Linney’s back two bowlers produced the goods to win. Steve Davies had a real battle against Mortimer’s Paul Lill which was nip and tuck throughout. But at 20-20 it was Davies nicking the last shot.
Brian Broome also bowled some excellent woods, winning the final game 21-12 to give Linney a 7-3 win and a +46 shots victory.
Captain Ian Jackson would like to thank all his team for their support during the season and hopes that next season the weather will be kinder.
