RELEGATED Cleobury Mortimer produced a superb display to defeat Walsall 34-30 in Midlands Two West North.

A Sid Gittens try put Cleobury ahead after just four minutes and, although Walsall responded with a penalty, the hosts stretched their lead to 12-3 on 16 minutes as Hayden Edwards converted a Sam Bills try.

A Walsall try narrowed the gap to 12-10 but Jack Samways went over on the half-hour, with Edwards converting to give Cleobury a nine-point advantage.

Walsall fought back again with another converted try but an Edwards penalty gave Mortimer a 22-17 lead heading into half-time.

A converted try and penalty Walsall 27-22 ahead after the break but Cleobury fought back to lead 29-27 with a Jon Britton try converted by Edwards.

Walsall edged ahead again with another penalty but Dan Bird’s 67th-minute try won it for Cleobury, who round off the season with a derby at home to unbeaten champions Whitchurch on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Clee Hill will finish third in Midlands Four West North if they avoid defeat at Rugeley this Saturday.

Hill recorded an impressive 33-3 win over Market Drayton last weekend with Charlie Evans bagging a hat-trick of tries. Callum Spires and Tom Evans also crossed the whitewash.
