BATTLING against the elements, Caynham’s Sheila Bennett took her first county bowls title in the Duckham Pairs.

Bennett, playing with Jennie Cole – enjoying her sixth Herefordshire county final of the year – defeated current holders Barbara Griffiths and Karen Tandler in the early rounds.

All are team-mates at Brimfield and Little Hereford Bowling Club.

In the final, Bennett and Cole carved out a nail-biting 12-9 win against Marcia Gwynne and Jenny Murray, who were playing on their home green at Ross.

“We had wind and heavy rain on the day, I can only praise Ross-on-Wye for their excellent green which maintained a high standard of play when many a green would have been waterlogged,” Cole said.

Meanwhile, time is running out for teams to enter this year’s Shropshire Boccia Tournament.

There will be four heats across the county with the action heading to Ludlow on October 10 before the final takes place in Shrewsbury on October 19.

The sport is a form of indoor bowls played from a seated position making it suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

This annual event is organised by Shropshire RCC in partnership with the local colleges.

Each team consists of three people and there is an entry fee of £6 per team.
