Tenbury Ladies 1st will be hoping to finish the year on a high when they head to Harborne 3rd on Saturday.

And although they suffered a second successive defeat at the weekend, losing 3-0 at home to Stourport 3rd, a victory could hoist them back towards the leading group at the top of Division One of the Worcestershire League.

The Stourport match was always going to be tricky for a Tenbury side who were without a number of key players. Strikers Emily Moseley and Abi Davies were unavailable along with midfielder Rachel Croxton-Broome and Emma Reddock who plays at the back.

But the Leominster-based side still managed to create a string of chances and were unlucky not to claim something from the game, the visiting keeper making a number of good saves.

Stourport started the better and took an early lead but this kick-started Tenbury with Vicky Jones and Cat Mumford linking up nicely on the right-hand side. The home side began to use their experience to play the ball against their younger opponents and both Gemma Toms and Annette Burgoyne narrowly missed out on an equaliser.

But after forcing their way back into the game, Tenbury then conceded again just before the break.

It was a similar tale after the interval with the Stourport keeper making more good saves while, for Tenbury, Jo Turvey and Lindsey Aldridge-Bufton made a number of vital tackles.

Mumford again utilised her passing ability to cross a great ball in to Burgoyne which went just wide of the goal before the visitors rounded off the scoring late on from a penalty corner.

This weekend’s match at Harborne is a re-arranged fixture after the original game at King Edwards Five Ways was postponed due to a frozen pitch. When the sides met at the Bridge Street Sports Centre in the opening game of the season, Tenbury ran out 2-1 winners.

The young Tenbury Ladies 2nd continued their impressive campaign in Division Three with a 1-1 draw against Droitwich 2nd.

The side, made up almost entirely of 14 and 15-year-olds, have lost just one of their six matches so far and lie third in the table.

Club spokeswoman Kate George said: “This is their first season and they are doing really well. Young players are the future of our club and that future looks very healthy at the moment.”

Anyone interested in joining Tenbury Ladies should head to Leominster’s Bridge Street Sports Centre on a Thursday evening between 7.30 and 8.30pm.
