ASHLEY Edwards and Jennie Cole took the Tandler Pairs for the third year in a row on a dramatic Brimfield & Little Hereford Bowling Club finals’ day.

Four of the five competitions went down to last-end deciders on a rain-soaked day but Edwards and Cole avoided any prospect of a nerve-wracking finish.

The experienced duo built up a 15-5 lead against Karen and Alec Tandler before a spirited comeback brought the score back to 17-14 with five ends to play.

But hopes of a shock were soon extinguished as 12 shots in three ends left the Tandlers throwing in the towel with two ends to play. Edwards and Cole ultimately cruised home 29-14.

Nine hours of bowling saw the other four finals go right down to the wire with the Albert Duval Pairs setting the standard.

Richard Griffiths and Helen Skinner pulled ahead 13-6 but had to hold out 13-11 against Edwards and Howard Turberfield.

There were just two shots in the John Collett Trophy with one end to play. In the end, Liz Smurthwaite, Lynne Allen and Edwards nailed down the win by drawing five shots against Sylvia Mallett, Josie Jordan and Jimmy Lindsay in an 18-12 triumph.

More tension followed in the Cecil O’Boyle Plate as Dave Evans, Mike Mallett and Howard Turberfield struck early to take six shots on the second end.

Undeterred, Chris Wait, Bill Wheatley and Lindsay bounced back to take a 10-9 advantage into the last end but Turberfield took out the wood to give his side two for an 11-10 win at the last.

There was another close finish in the Barnett Bowl with Edwards and Eileen Powell taking a 10-7 lead before hanging on to win 11-10 against Alec Tandler and Josie Jordan.

The weekend concluded with the finals of the crown singles and pairs. Edwards won the singles 21-12 against Cyril Wait and Alec Tandler with Cyril Wait taking the pairs 21-19 against Edwards and Chris Wait.
