LUDLOW cricket captain Will Sparrow enjoyed a seamless transition during the changing of the seasons by helping the town’s rugby club get off to a flying start.

Sparrow swapped to an oval ball and made an immediate impression with a two tries in Ludlow’s 38-13 derby success against Cleobury Mortimer on Saturday.

Russell Jones and Sam Wilkes also got over the line in a bonus-point victory played at Luctonians due to Ludlow’s Linney headquarters being used as a car park for the food festival.

Sparrow said: “The seasons have overlapped for the past few years so you get used to it.

“I had the advantage of playing some midweek friendlies for the rugby team while playing cricket at the weekends so it all panned out quite smoothly.”

And Sparrow reckons Ludlow should be targeting a stranglehold on proceedings in Midlands Three West North on the back of last season’s third-placed finish.

“Staying unbeaten has to be the target,” he added.

“We gained victories over Tamworth and Newcastle last season and they both went up.

"Losing twice to Cleobury cost us so this represents a good start. Promotion is our aim.”
