THE Worcestershire Open Pro Am returned to Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club for a second year.

This huge event, among the biggest on the county’s golf calendar, was generously sponsored by local businessman and Cleobury member Andy Smith of Kidderminster Self Storage.

Just one of the 21 professionals from across the region managed to shoot a below-par score, a true testament to how much the course has matured over the years.

It was Evesham Golf Club’s Daniel Clee who mastered the conditions as he carded a three-under-par score for 39 points.

His faultless display ensured he finished three clear of Ryan Corbett (The Worcestershire) while David Finch, Adam Whiting, Chris Mole, Tom Warbrick and Matt Jones all shared third place with their one over par score for 35 points.

Despite making just one point on the first hole, Matt Jones of Moor Park Golf Club along with his team of Cleobury members secured the honours in the team event on 81 points, countback ensuring they finished ahead of the talented Bransford lads.

Cleobury’s director of golf, Dave Pain, said: “I would like to thank all of the professionals for supporting the event we host at Cleobury. Without such strong support the event would not take place.

“I’d also like to thank Andy Smith for his sponsorship which allows us to put on such a significant prize pot for the professionals.”

Over at Ludlow Golf Club, there were celebrations for Steve Cox and Martin Langford who lifted the Tommy Adams Cup.

Their betterball Stableford score of 46 points was enough to secure the win while runners-up John Evans and Liam Magill were just a point behind.

Will Norton took time out from his long hours of hard work on the farm to pair up with Alan Meyrick to finish third with 44 points.

Bill Billson led the way in the seniors competition with a nett score of 67, one shot ahead of Trevor Lawrence. There was a three-way tie for third with Glenn Mayoh, Peter Clements and Rex Tudor-Hughes all finishing with a level par score of 70.

The eight qualifiers for the Seniors Scratch Cup are Mike Hughes, Bill Billson, Chris Bott, Eddie Rowland, Geoff Rose, Joe Patrick, Stuart Roberts and Allen Hunt.

John Harris’ Captain’s Day is on July 2 with the event open to all sections of the club.

And after a wait of 16 years, Kim Simm has celebrated shooting her first ever hole-in-one. She managed the feat in the Ladies' May Stableford.

She said:“I hit a five wood and knew that it was a good hit as soon as it left the club. It drew nicely landing about 20 yards short of the hole and ran up and onto the green. I couldn’t quite believe it! It’s taken me 16 years playing golf to hit my first ace but it was worth waiting for!”
