CHURCH Stretton won the North Midlands Colts Cup for the first time with a thrilling 28-27 win over Hereford.
But they had to do it the hard way, fighting back after conceding 12 points inside the opening ten minutes thanks to two catch-and-drive tries from line-outs, plus a conversion.
Two scores either side of the break put Stretton in the driving seat as they opened up a 28-12 advantage, centre Will Davies leading the way with a brace, Brad Hughes and Will Lee adding the others and Alex Hearle kicking the conversions.
Hereford clawed their way back into contention and edged to within a point with a last gasp try only for the conversion, from a difficult angle, to fly wide.
Church Stretton’s 1sts fell to an unexpected 39-0 defeat at Midlands Four West (North) bottom side Market Drayton on Saturday and end their league campaign at home to Barton-Under-Needwood on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the division, Bishops Castle rounded off their season with a 19-0 defeat at Telford Hornets and Clee Hill’s final Midlands Three West (North) game ended in a 71-10 defeat at Newcastle, a Charlie Evans try and a penalty try for collapsing the scrum making up the scoreline.
