CHURCH Stretton warmed up for their trip to Sportsjam Mercian League Premier Division leaders Allscott this weekend with a convincing 4-0 victory over Madeley Sports.

A brace from Sean Gough helped Stretton to the three points with Richard Groom and Scott Peever also on the scoresheet.

The win, their fifth league victory of the campaign, moved Stretton up to seventh in the table ahead of the clash against Allscott who thumped Shifnal United 9-0 on Saturday.

In Division One, Clee Hill United, Bishop's Castle Town and Brown Clee saw their matches fall victim to the weather.

Tenbury Town weren't so lucky, though, losing out 5-3 at second-bottom Bromyard in Division One of the Hereford Times Herefordshire Football League.

Mark Boucker, Alex Bright and Jack Farrar were on target for the visitors.

In the rugby, Ludlow recorded a last gasp win at Cannock in Midlands 3 West (North).

The match was in some doubt as the referee turned up late, delaying the kick-off.

Once they started, Ludlow must have wished the game had been called off as they conceded an early try before a spell which required Ludlow to defend well, culminating in a line out right on the Ludlow line.

However, the visitors managed to escape with the ball thanks to Josh Hill before Will Spencer ran the length of the field to score a try which was converted to level the scores before Spencer kicked a penalty to send Ludlow in at half time 10-7 ahead.

Cannock started the second half well and scored two tries, neither of which were converted, to put them in control at 17-10.

But Ludlow weren't finished there and fought back to score again thanks to Mark Williams, with Spencer converting to level things up.

Then, with just two minutes remaining, Ludlow were awarded a penalty which man-of-the-moment Spencer duly dispatched to secure Ludlow a fine away win.

"I think our fitness helped," said club spokesman, Phil Norton.

"It was a good win and we're pleased with how the season has gone so far."

Cleobury Mortimer recorded a fine 26-0 win over Eccleshall to keep the heat on Ludlow.

Tries from Paul Hulland (two), Ed Lewis and Paddy Hooper, together with three Dave Leach conversions helped Cleobury cement their place in third, although captain Will Bache said it wasn't as straightforward as the scoreline suggests.

"They were not a bad side actually," he said.

"They are the best team we have played at home this year, apart from Tamworth on the opening day.

"I think the wind was also a great leveller."

Bache said he was a little disappointed his charges didn't add to the scoring but is pleased with the way the campaign is going.

"It's going quite well.

"It's sometimes difficult when you can't pick the same team each week but the lads who have come in over the summer have added to the side's strength."

Church Stretton were on the wrong end of a heavy loss, going down 46-0 at Bromyard in Midlands 4 West (North).

Bishop's Castle's match with Market Drayton was postponed.
