ANDREW Price and Will Hough came away from an arduous Briedden Rally with the prize for best Under-1400cc car in their Suzuki Swift GTi.

The event, organised by the Welsh Border Car Club and starting from Llanfyllin, was a round of a number of championships, including the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs, and had a full 75-car entry.

Shrewsbury-based Price and Church Stretton’s Hough, both members of Ludlow Castle Motor Club, were seeded in the semi-expert class and once again they were in involved in a family battle for honours, with Andy seeded at 51 and son Fred at 50 in his Proton Coupe.

Conditions were difficult with persistent fog throughout the night, which, coupled with the muddy leaf-covered lanes, made for a very tough night for the 75 crews.

Fred got off to a good start, ably navigated by Dave Thomas, and was 24 seconds up on Andrew after the first section, although by the time they reached the petrol halt at Guilsfield Price the elder had eked out a 41-second lead to lie 29th overall and seventh in class, with Fred 32nd and ninth in class.

Price/Hough maintained their pace through the night and by the finish at Meifod the lead over Price/Thomas had extended to three minutes 14 seconds, leaving them in 31st overall seventh in class but vitally their consistent pace saw them lift the Under-1400cc category. Price/Thomas finished 32nd and eighth in class.

Bayston Hill’s Geoff Lowe teamed up with Rob Bolliver in Rob’s BMW in the novice class. They found the event a challenge but persevered to take a well deserved 37th overall and third in class.

Stefan Morris brought out his Vauxhall Nova but unfortunately his failure to gain a signature at a control meant an early finish.
