LUDLOW failed in a bold bid to chase 260 against Shropshire County League Premier Division visitors St Georges.

The Burway boys went for their shots from the outset, and even when struggling on 124-6 - Jack Griffiths having hit ten boundaries in a run-a-ball 41 - in reply to the Telford side’s 259 they refused to throw in the towel.

Skipper Sam Edwards (33) and South African professional Kevin Hinton (18) kept them ticking over and at 184-9 with 13 overs left, it was left to the last-wicket pairing of Louis Watkins and James Gerritse to maintain the pursuit.

Gerritse survived a couple of dropped catches and they only decided to abandon the chase with two overs left, Watkins (38 not out) blocking out the 49th over as a maiden.

Gerritse finished on 21 not out as Ludlow ended on 236-9 to take the maximum points possible from a losing draw, and only one less than St Georges.

Earlier Gerritse had taken 5-56, with St Georges losing their last three wickets in the final over from the seamer, one to a run out from Jamie Smith, to be bowled out for 259.

Finlay Clarke made 92 as ten-man Ludlow 2nd chased 233 to beat St Georges 2nd by two wickets in Reserves Division One while Ludlow 3rd saw some eager tail wagging in their Division Three clash with Corvedale.

Number nine batsman Joe Webb hit nine fours in an unbeaten 62 and number 10 Albert Wall gave him some able support with 27 as Ludlow reached 174-9, Russell Wilcox (5-22) having caused the early problems by dismissing the top five.

But Corvedale then laboured to 157-9, with Glyn Tipton contributing 38 and Jim Alderson finished on 30 not out.

Skipper Simon Miles led by example for Ludlow 4th against Quayside, but his efforts with bat and ball proved in vain in a losing draw.

Miles took 4-39 in Quayside’s 195-6 and then hit 30 not out as Ludlow replied with 158-4.

Josh Williams also made 53.
