CLEOBURY Mortimer Golf Club paid tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros in again holding their annual stableford competition in memory of the Spanish legend.

The day belonged to John Haywood, who played some great golf on his way to a winning 40-point score.

Resident professional Sam Pain said: “John also won this competition back in 2012 and he consistently performs well in the seniors section. I am delighted for him.”

Meanwhile Martin Cleaver celebrated his first win of the season in Cleobury’s Men's double roll-up stableford.

He finished level on 39 points with Terry Clarke but claimed the honours by virtue of a superior back nine.

Cleaver said: “It was a very strange round. Off the tee I was very poor but I chipped and putted from everywhere and I am very pleased with the result.”

Elsewhere, Amy Millward is to undertake a three-year PGA Foundation degree which would see her become a fully fledged PGA professional.

The degree, which will be based at Cleobury Mortimer, involves theory and practice and is assessed by assignments and examinations during a one-week residential at The Belfry once a year.

Millward, 20, who cut her handicap to five in the recent Ladies’ stableford on Captain’s Weekend, said: “It’s great to finally get my handicap cut and be able to apply for my PGA course. It starts in October and I can’t wait to get started. I have to say a big thank to all the Pain family for their help and support and helping me reach where I want to be.”

And Maya Johnson was been voted Level 2 Apprentice of the Year at Telford College after completing her apprenticeship with flying colours.

It was focused on hospitality and catering, which looked at preparing food, front of house, cooking and training other members of staff.

The 18-year-old was put forward for Apprentice of the Year by her tutor, who spoke with both Kathie Rowbotham and Graham Pain at the club, with Rowbotham producing a personal profile which was sent to the judges.

Johnson said: “This has given me a massive confidence boost and motivated me to carry on and gain more qualifications at the club. They have been great in supporting me, especially Kathie, who has been my mentor. She has been amazing and I wouldn’t have done as well without Kathie and George Molnar's help.”

*DAVE Fish chose his partners well for the Junior Captain’s Day at Ludlow Golf Club.

With the big-hitting John and Will Evans at his side, their net 55 secured first place, one shot ahead of Daz Humphries, Harry Lines and Drew Mitchell.

Everyone was welcomed and entertained by junior captain Nathan Herdsfield at the ninth hole, with a little help from his family. Congratulations to them for raising over £250 for the junior section.
