MORE than 220 players took part in a hugely successful captain’s weekend hosted by Jon Gaskell at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club.

It featured the club’s first ever night-time event, a charity tournament in which nine holes were lit up with glow sticks and the 44 players used glow balls.

A?Texas Scramble was won by Rob Barnes, Alex Barnes, Tom Rawlings and Harry King.

Earlier on Friday Mel Kingston had kicked off proceedings by winning the seniors’ event with 41 points, with Amy Millard taking the ladies’ event with 37 points and Tom Rawlings the juniors on 22.

The trophy everyone wanted to get their hands on was the Captain’s Cup, the first of the four Cleobury majors.

That took place on Saturday over Badger’s Sett and Deer Park for an 18-hole medal, and was won by Jem Jones with an incredible net 60.

Jones has had some time away from golf to concentrate on exams but he came back swinging with this win.

Cleobury professional Sam Pain said: “The scores were a true testament to the practice and preparation the players put in.

"Jem Jones has had many second-place finishes and I am delighted he finally got the win he has been craving.

"He has real talent.”

Paul Liggins continued his impressive form with a net 66, while Jamie Fearnley, who has been knocking on the door of a good score, finally delivered a 65.

Stuart Humphries recorded the lowest gross of the weekend with a 73 to give him a net 67.

His score could have been better as he shot seven birdies, but double bogeys on 10 and 11 cost him.

Meanwhile, Andy Dixon was blessed with mostly sunny weather as he hosted Ludlow GC’s Captain’s Day.

The captain’s prize for the best net score went to Darren Humphries with 38 points.

The vice-captain’s prize for the best gross score was won by Nick Apperley on 33.

Jayne Smith took the ladies’ prize with 31 and Mike Perks was the best of the seniors with 35. Drew Mitchell won the Jack Price Cup for best junior with a fantastic 42 points.
