ALL four Tenbury and Cleobury Mortimer sides suffered defeats on a barren weekend of Worcestershire County League combat.

Tenbury's first team were beaten for only the second time in eight matches as they conceded ground at the head of the Division Five table.

Their conquerors were unbeaten leaders Astwood Bank, whose 215-8 off 50 overs proved too good.

Opener Dave Price hit 86 before being trapped lbw by Mark Yarranton while teenager Henry Anton, making his first appearance of the season, profited towards the end of the innings to finish with 4-49 off nine overs.

Tenbury needed someone to score big runs but the top order failed to get in and though Tom Pugh (23), 15-year-old Anton (33) and Rob Farrar (26) all made useful contributions, the damage had been done and Tenbury were dismissed for 150.

Skipper Steve Giles:?“Astwood Bank are a good side and they deserve to be top of the table.

"Normally we would back ourselves to score 216 but they bowled tightly and we lost wickets at key times.”

Cleobury Mortimer lost by five wickets to Netherton in Division Three.

Sam Evans was unlucky to finish on the losing side after scoring 51 and taking 4-25, but Cleobury’s 155 proved below par as Netherton eased home on 156-5.

Both Tenbury and Cleobury Mortimer 2nd XIs were on the wrong end of comprehensive verdicts.

Cleobury 2nd were bowled out for 99 by Martley 2nd and went down to a six-wicket defeat.

Their first seven batsmen mustered just 29 between them and it need some tail wagging from Robert Davies (26) and Richard Butcher (24 not out) to rally them.

Tenbury 2nd fared even worse in being rolled over for just 75 in succumbing to a heavy 174-run walloping against Astwood Bank 4th.

Astwood totalled 249-7 off 45 overs and Tenbury had no answers.

Skipper Ben Thompson (27) was their only batsman to reach double figures.

Corvedale also went under meekly against Llanidloes in Division Three of the Shropshire County League, with the Welsh team’s openers knocking off the 99 runs needed to win in just 15.2 overs.

Corvedale had been shot out for 98, with Edward Williams scoring a worthy 18 batting at No.8.

Corvedale 2nd owed much of their 162-9 against Quayside to the efforts of Ian Alderson and Glyn Tipton.

Opener Alderson hit a solid 42 while Tipton hit four fours and two sixes in a 24-ball innings of 37.

Quayside were untroubled in knocking off the 163 needed for the loss of one wicket in 19.5 overs.

Jack Purkis carried his bat for a defiant 32 not out for Bishop’s Castle 2nd against Market Drayton 2nd.

Paul Cottrell took 4-27 off 11 overs to help keep Market Drayton down to 141-9, but Purkis was offered little support, with No.10 Peter Griffiths (11) the only other batsman to reach double figures as Castle were dismissed for 83.
