EDUARDO Nascimento produced an incredible five-under 66 to win the first medal of the season at Cleobury Mortimer GC.

Resident golf coach Sam Pain has been giving lessons to Nascimento, who has Brazilian heritage, and the tuition paid dividends with a stunning performance on some lightning-quick greens.

He cut his handicap by two in winning by one shot from the consistent Bryan Colley, with Karl Tyers third.

Pain said: “Eduardo hits the ball really well for someone off his handicap. We made some swing path changes and worked on his release at impact to give him greater distance and accuracy. Even off his new handicap he won’t be there for long.”

Also deserving of a special mention was Ash Preece, who shot 41 points on Saturday with the nearest score to him being 35. Meanwhile two Cleobury Mortimer golfers have recently achieved holes in one. James Tangey aced the fifth hole of Foxes Run at Cleobury. Fresh from a 9am lesson with professional Pain, Tangey hit the course to put into practice what he had been taught. A crisp five-iron flew on to the green – and the ball disappeared.

And at Bridgnorth in the Shropshire and Herefordshire Professionals’ Alliance, Mark Southall aced the third hole.

Meanwhile, Cleobury’s Emily Price has won the Shropshire Schools Under-18s County Championship for the third consecutive year.

The Lacon Childe pupil scored 73 on the par 71 course at Arscott.

The weather was sunny but a testing wind made things difficult and Price had an unusual front-nine score of five over par, only to rally on the back nine with four birdies to post a winning score that was seven shots ahead of her nearest competitor. Price has now qualified for the English Schools Under-16s final in Leicestershire and the Under-18s Regional Championship later this year at her home club.

Elsewhere, Julie Fullerton claimed the Angora Bowl for 2014-15 at Ludlow Golf Club. Awarded every February, at the time of the annual handicap review, the bowl is presented to the lady member who has reduced her handicap by the greatest number of strokes in the previous year. Fullerton’s handicap reduced from 19 to 13.5 and she was presented with her trophy by lady captain Janet Roberts.

Will Evans has moved ahead in the race for the Eakin Bowl. He won Division One of the April Bogey with a score of four up, taking his aggregate total to seven up. He is being chased by Scott Groom (6 up) and Dave Marsh (5 up) after two rounds of the event.

Dave Simpson scored one up and finished on top in Division Two while the Division Three winner was Alan Reid with a score of three up.
