CLEOBURY Mortimer head into this weekend knowing a win on Saturday will see them end a remarkable season by securing promotion.

The Shropshire outfit have won all but one of their 17 Midlands 4 (West) North games this campaign, racking up 829 points along the way.

Not surprisingly they sit top of the pile and will secure the club's first league title success with a win at third-bottom Market Drayton on Saturday.

They cemented their pole position last weekend by demolishing Greyhound 89-3, although captain Will Bache says they can still do better.

"We could probably be more clinical at times," he said.

"It was not one of our best performances but we got the win."

Cleobury experienced a few knocks from the previous weekend's cup defeat by Rugby Lions so rested some players, although the squad still had far too much for Greyhound.

Paul Hulland weighed in with four tries, and he was joined by Dave Shorter (three), Tom Leach (two), Alex Howman (two), John Hulland (one), Bache (one) and Allan Shields (one).

Shields kicked eight conversions and a penalty.

"I can't take anything away from them," added Bache.

"I want to challenge them between now and the end of the season and I'd like to go unbeaten in that time.

"There are certainly a couple of players here who I think are capable of playing at a higher level.

"But from a team point of view we just want to win the league. It would be the first time in the club's history."

Cleobury's remarkable form has seen them beat Tenbury 97-0 and 76-3, and Bromyard 80-0.

They have topped the table all campaign and to date have scored 829 points, conceding just 79.

It looked as though they were going to go the whole season winning every game before they came unstuck at the end of February when they lost 12-3 at third-placed Cannock.

Meanwhile, in Midlands 3 West (North), Clee Hill went down 16-10 at home to top-of-the-table Handsworth.

The result leaves Clee Hill in eighth place ahead of this Saturday's trip to Harborne, who lie second.

On the final day of the season they entertain Newcastle.

Tenbury were out of luck in Midlands 4 West (North) as they went down 38-0 at Barton-under-Needwood.

In Midlands 5 West (North), Church Stretton kept up their title challenge with a 41-12 win over Essington.

Stretton lie in second place, six points behind Aldridge with two games to play. Aldridge have completed their fixtures.
