CLEOBURY Mortimer's volleyball team have continued their winning ways, triumphing 3-0 at Tettenhall and coming from behind to beat Birmingham University 2nd 3-2.

They currently lie in second place in West Midlands Volleyball Association Division 2, having only lost one match all season.

The Tettenhall match ended up in a comfortable win, with Cleobury getting their noses in front in each set and playing some very controlled volleyball.

The Birmingham match was a completely different affair as Cleobury put in a Jekyll and Hyde performance, winning the first set, before losing the next two.

The game changed when the Birmingham coach was ejected from the sports hall and Cleobury really got their act together, running out comfortable winners in five sets.

The ladies team are third in West Midlands League Division 1 following an encouraging start to the year.

The Shropshire team recorded 3-0 wins over both the University of Birmingham and Nuneaton before losing to the same scoreline against Telford.

The latter game was a close affair throughout the first two sets with great defending from Becky Gallagher and attacking from Charlotte Froggatt and Rosie Millichamp.

But their good play couldn’t prevent narrow losses in both sets.

Chances of getting anything from the match diminished with the loss of Kath Howells through a wrist injury, and the third set was quickly lost.

Cleobury’s youthful ladies 2nd team were no match for a very experienced Wombourne team, losing 3-0 in a one sided affair.

Cleobury’s inexperience showed and although they played well, they lacked power and know how, especially when it came to earning points.

The club are holding their annual Horse Racing fundraising evening at 7.30pm this Saturday at Cleobury Social Club, 7.30pm.
