TENBURY Town’s bid to reach a third cup final is over after losing an incredible 11-goal thriller.

Town eventually lost 6-5 to Kington Reserves in a HFL HJ Handley Cup tie, which saw four penalties amid the goal frenzy.

The Worcestershire side had trailed the second round tie 4-2 with just seven minutes of normal time remaining but fought back to force extra time.

The club now turns its attention to the league and their two cup finals, against Ledbury Town Reserves in the HFA Junior Cup and AFC Worcester Olympic Under 21s in the Worcestershire Minor Cup.

“It was a bit of a ridiculous game really,” said Town spokesman, Carl Lambert.

“I think we had about 65 to 70 per cent of the play.

“We had enough chances to win about three games.

“But perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise. We’re still in two cup finals and we’ve only played seven league matches so we need to catch up with that.”

Town were on the back foot early on against Kington and fell behind to a fifth minute spot kick after a home team striker was brought down.

The visitors improved after this setback and had 20 minutes of good possession, creating a number of chances which went begging, before Alex Bright forced an equaliser after good work by Jack Farrar.

A few moments later, Tenbury were ahead when Bright fed Chris Patton who fired home.

The lead was short-lived though, with Kington equalising on 40 minutes when a striker was found in space in the box.

Despite the setback, Town had a glorious chance to go in at half time ahead when Bright was tripped in the box leading to another penalty.

However, Mark Boucker saw his spot kick saved, with the rebound also thwarted by the goalkeeper.

Kington had their noses in front shortly after the break before making it 4-2 following a disputed penalty when many Tenbury players believed a foul was committed outside the penalty area.

Tenbury heads didn’t drop and with seven minutes to go a deflected Adam Everall shot found its way into the net to set up a grandstand finish.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Bright snatched an equaliser to force extra time.

Remarkably, another penalty was awarded in extra time this time, which Ashley Botwood converted to make it 5-4 but the lead was wiped out when Tenbury conceded a fifth before Kington scored the winner.

Tenbury United's HFA Charity Bowl semi-final with Ewyas Harold was postponed.
