TENBURY captain Will Gough believes his team will get stronger in the New Year and are good enough to stay in Midlands 4 West (North).

The Palmers Meadow side lost their tenth game of the season at the hands of Cannock last Saturday to leave them rooted to the foot of the division at Christmas.

Tenbury only have four points and are six points from safety.

But Gough acknowledges that if the team can grab a few wins after the festive break then it should propel the side up the table and away from danger.

“We have got to come back with a refreshed attitude and have a re-think about some things,” said Gough.

“We’re just doing the basic things wrong and are quite quiet on the pitch, our talking hasn’t been up to par.

“It is a big learning curve for everyone and we’ve got a lot of young players.

“It is very much a work in progress.”

Gough has targeted games against Market Drayton, and Greyhound who are ninth and 10th respectively in the league table, as must win fixtures.

“We have to beat Greyhound at home and Market Drayton away and pick up a couple of other wins,” he said.

“We’ve got teams coming down to Palmers Meadow in the New Year and think we won’t get relegated.

“We just have to right our wrongs.”

Cannock, who are riding high in second place in the table, rattled in 54 points against Tenbury to show why they are tipped to get promoted alongside Cleobury Mortimer.

Tenbury did grab a try through Callum Spires, with Gough adding the conversion.

The captain also kickED over a penalty, but the home side were always playing catch-up against their stronger opponents.

“It was a bit of a shame because we couldn’t really get any momentum,” said Gough.

“They were very well drilled and their offloads were good.

“They got the ball behind us a lot and when you do that, you end up knackered.”

Tenbury now have a break from league action but do have friendlies over the festive period.

They will face Ludlow at Palmers Meadow this Saturday before travelling to Clee Hill on January 3. Their next league fixture is against leaders Cleobury before hosting Greyhound in a crucial game the following weekend.
