A YOUNG Ludlow boxer has continued his impressive run of form by recording a unanimous victory.

Ben Bywater, who is nicknamed 'The Beast', put in arguably his best performance to date on his way to seeing off the challenge of James Hughes, a boxer he had beaten by a majority points decision just a month earlier.

The 17 year-old is now unbeaten with his coach at Ludlow Amateur Boxing Club saying the youngster's hard work is beginning to pay off.

"It was a unanimous decision," said Colin Woodfield, who is also vice-chair of the Ludlow club.

"He beat James in a previous event in Shrewsbury a month ago by a majority points decision.

"This time his learnt his mistakes from that previous bout.

"He came out like a rocket in the first round and tried to get his opponent on the back foot.

"He stuck to his game plan and it paid off for him. Sometimes it doesn't work in your favour but this time it did.

"It was not an easy bout but he has done his work and it has paid off for him."

Bywater's bout was one of about 15 on the card at Meir Amateur Boxing Club in Stoke-on-Trent.

Woodfield said he would like to enter Bywater in a championship tournament taking place early next year but added nothing has been confirmed.

"It can be difficult to find opponents because there's only 32 lads in Ben's weight class in the country, so it's hard to get him a match," said Woodfield.

He said Ludlow ABC is going from strength to strength with 35-40 people regularly attending training sessions at the club's training centre at Wheeler Road, which opened in September.

The club’s original building was demolished over safety concerns several years ago.

Volunteers assisted with the fitting of the new building, which now also serves as a community base.
