TALENTED golfer Emily Price has been selected to play for England Under-16 girls against Switzerland this week.

She is among six promising teenagers who have been selected to play Switzerland in the under-16 girls’ match at Heswall in Cheshire. England won the inaugural match last year.

“We are all delighted by her call up and wish her all the best,” said Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club spokesman Dave Pain.

The England team: Emily Price, 14, (Cleobury Mortimer), the new English U15 girls’ champion; Louisa Brunt, 15, (Royal Birkdale), from the England Golf North West U16 squad; Mollie Lawrence, 16, (Rochester and Cobham Park) from the South East U16 squad; Martha Lewis, 14, (St George’s Hill) from the South U16 squad; Natasha Slater, 14 (Furness), the new Scottish U14 girls’ champion from the U16 North squad; Amelia Williamson, 14, (Royal Cromer) of the U16 East squad; The reserve is Jessica Hall, 15, (Bishop Auckland) of the U16 North squad.

The 14-year-old, who lives in Ashford Carbonnel, held her nerve earlier this month to win the English Girls’ Open Under-15 Championship in a final-hole drama at Copt Heath.

She trailed by seven shots with 10 holes to play and holed a 34-foot downhill put to clinch the title.

It was a superb finish for Emily, who will be making her England Under-18 schools’ girls debut against Wales at Conway on August 25.

Last season, Emily won the under-14 girls’ section of the US Kids Golf European Championship in Scotland.

Emily’s dad, Kelvin, said: “Emily was seven shots back with 10 holes to play at Copt Heath but she birdied five out of the last 10 holes.

“She holed a 34-foot downhill putt and there were 200 people who followed them around. Emily was overwhelmed.”

Emily was trailing by two shots as she stood on the 18th tee.

But she birdied the final hole of the tournament to finish on nine-under par.

Emily is a pupil at Lacon Childe School and she practises at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club.

She is coached by professional coach Alan Partridge out of Wishaw Golf Club.

Dad Kelvin said: “Emily practises very hard at her golf and has got the bug.

“I played a lot of golf as a teenager but I have a large family now, so I don’t have the time.”
