BURWAY’S Roy Crowther has retained the Flowfit Ludlow and District Bowls League Veterans title at Clungunford Bowling Club.

Crowther tasted success for the second year in a row after defeating Corve’s Mike Weston 21-11 in a repeat of the previous season’s final.

League chairman Lillian Payne presented the trophy afterwards to the victorious Crowther and, on behalf of the league, thanked everyone from Clungunford Bowling Club for all their help in hosting the competition.

She also praised all those who took part in the competition, helped mark cards and tape the games.

A field of 16 took part in the second running of the competition and the host club provided many entrants but only two reached the quarter-final stage.

Defending champion Crowther overcame Clungunford's Keith Rudd 21-4 in the first semi-final.

Due to being a home bowler, Rudd had to start on -2 and soon found himself 13-0 down as Crowther came out all guns blazing. Rudd got a few shots back but Crowther was too strong.

Weston took on Bromfield's Gerry Haynes in the second semi-final and the game started evenly as it went to 4-4.

However, Weston hit five twos on the bounce to lead 14-4. Haynes pulled it back to 15-6 but Weston then ran out to win comfortably 21-6.

In a repeat of the 2013 final, Weston started strongly and led 6-3 before Crowther hit his stride in the next four ends to lead 11-6.

Weston tried to keep it close and was trailing 15-11 before Crowther ran out to win 21-11 and to deservedly clinch the crown.
