SHROPSHIRE County player Helen White has lifted the inaugural Ludlow Golf Club’s Ladies Scratch Bowl.

The club’s first ever female club president, Edna Spanner, presented the ladies’ scratch bowl with the first-joint club captain, Jacki Corbett.

The event was hailed a great success and many of this year’s entrants are hoping to secure a coveted place in next year’s competition.

Harry Lines won the men’s Scratch Salver after returning an impressive score of 71+69 (level par).

White, who plays for Worfield Golf Club, triumphed in the women’s contest which attracted players from as far afield as Minchinhampton and Beau Desert.

Organiser Kim Simm said: “The tournament was another first for the club in our 125th anniversary year

“The new event, held alongside the Men’s Scratch Open, fills a huge void in the fixture list for ladies golf.

“There are plenty of Scratch competitions for men, there are no others for women in the entire region.”

White, a 25-year-old four handicapper won the competition after carding gross 76.

With the course in excellent condition, the superfast greens, reading 10.5 on the stimp meter, took many of the visitors by surprise making scoring difficult for many.

However White, who has scored well at Ludlow in past county events, shot a gross 76, five shots clear of her playing partner and county team mate Vicky Bradbeer of Oswestry on 81 gross.

Immediate past county captain Ros Moor, from, Bridgnorth, was third - just one shot behind with an 82.

After travelling two hours from Minchinhampton Golf Club, Frances Lindley took the nett prize with nett 75.
