Clee Hill 25 pts Harborne 19 pts

FORMER captain Gary Edwards says Clee Hill Rugby Club are on the brink of an historic promotion.

The Hillmen know a win at already-relegated St Leonards this Saturday would secure a maiden promotion from Midlands Four West (North).

Hill are second in the table, two points above third-placed Cannock who travel to Tenbury this Saturday.

“It would be an historic promotion because we have never played at the level above,” said Edwards.

“A win would give us our first promotion to Midlands Three West (North) and we think we can get something out of this weekend’s match.”

Hill fought back from 14-0 down in last Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash against league leaders Harborne.

Luke Bowen and Steve Adams were Hill’s heroes as they pulled off a deserved win in front of a delighted home crowd.

Edwards said: “It was a really good win against Harborne.

“Harborne started very well and they played some running rugby. They were very lively and scored two tries in the opening 20 minutes.

“I think Harborne thought that they had the game in the bag.

“But our forwards came into the match and we started to hammer them up-front.”

Two quick-fire tries from Luke Bowen and a conversion from Craig Breakwell pulled Hill back into contention.

George Edwards touched down after good work from Adams to give Hill a 17-14 advantage at the break.

Scrum-half Charlie Evans added Hill’s fourth try, early in the second half, to increase the hosts’ advantage to 22-14.

But Harborne hit back to score a third try with 10 minutes remaining.

Craig Breakwell wrapped up Hill’s success with a late penalty.

Edwards said: “We would certainly be delighted to get promoted but it would involve a lot more travelling and commitment. Hopefully, we could pick up a few new players.”
